The private hire licence
If you do not currently hold a private hire licence, you will need to obtain one before joining Chance Cars. This must be acquired from Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, the local authority governing the area where Chance Cars is based. Your licence will authorize you to undertake all assignments on behalf of Chance Cars.

Required Documents
- A passport-sized photo taken within the last three months
- A UK driving licence (both the photo card and paper counterpart) displaying your current UK address
- Proof of your right to work in the UK (e.g., a valid passport and visa, if applicable)
- Identification necessary to initiate a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) application online, such as:
- A current valid passport
- A driving licence
- Two documents verifying your current address
- Completion of the DBS application online at home. Once processed, the DBS certificate will be mailed to you, and the council will be notified if it contains any relevant information (e.g., convictions or cautions).
- A medical report from your registered doctor confirming that you meet the DVLA Group 2 medical standard for vocational drivers.
- Successful completion of a knowledge test, which assesses:
- Map reading and route planning skills
- Handling of fares and money
- Knowledge of the Highway Code

For a first-time application, the cost of a three-year private hire licence in Reigate and Banstead is currently £274. The renewal fee is £257.
